The Lamplighter Report

The Lamplighters were people employed to light and maintain street lights.  Streetlights were lit each evening, generally by means of a wick on a long pole.  At dawn, they would return to put lights out using a small hook on the end of the pole. Another duty was to carry a ladder and renew the candles, oil, or gas mantles.  In some communities, lamplighters served in a role akin to a town watchman.

Unofficially, the Lamplighter spread neighborhood news/gossip from block to block.

This page and site will perform somewhat like the notes that were once randomly and freely attached to neighborhood lampposts. As our Digital Lamppost is on the internet, our neighborhood can be the whole world!
